BMW Group Middle East has announced that 2008 sales achieved a five per cent increase over its 2007 record-level figures. Across 14 importers in the region, 15,959 BMW and MINI vehicles were sold, signalling the importance and strength of the Middle East market despite the current global economic crisis.
“A five per cent growth during these challenging economic conditions is a significant achievement and in line with our expectations given the softening of demand during the second half of the year. The commitment of our importers coupled with new models launched in 2008 have helped our sales figures remain positive, said Phil Horton, Managing Director of BMW Group Middle East.
“The X6 Sports Activity Coupe, re-styled 3 Series, M3, 1 Series and MINI Clubman have all helped contribute to our growth. 2009 will be challenging but the underlying economic fundamentals in the Middle East are stronger than many other parts of the world, and consumer demand in the luxury segment still remains healthy. With our all-new 7 Series now starting to reach importers in numbers, we are optimistic that 2009 will be another good year.”
Another area of business that saw growth for BMW Group Middle East was BMW Premium Selection, the company’s used-car programme that offers customers peace-of-mind motoring as if they were purchasing a new BMW. 1,512 BMW vehicles were sold through BMW Premium Selection in eight importer markets.
On a worldwide level, BMW Group is taking action across all its business areas to meet the challenges faced by the current market climate. Utilising its flexible production facilities and variable working-time accounts, BMW Group factories have adjusted production volumes in line with worldwide demand.
“We remain a strong performing company with a solid foundation, which allows us to address the various issues in order to invest in our future. We are working closely with our headquarters in Germany and importers across the Middle East to look at ways in which we can launch new and innovative models successfully, and ensure a premium experience from the moment customers purchase a BMW until the day they decide to sell it.
Horton added: “Our robust EfficientDynamics strategy is a key part of BMW Group’s climate protection plan that enables the company to meet future challenges related to efficiency and sustainable mobility. It encompasses many technological innovations aimed at reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions while maintaining the driver’s driving pleasure. Many 2008 and 2009 models have been engineered with this technology and later this year we will introduce our first hybrid vehicle, the X6 ActiveHybrid. Our longer term climate protection aim is to have zero emissions by using alternative fuels such as hydrogen.”

BMW Group showcases latest models and sustainable mobility innovations
The new BMW Z4 made its global debut at the Detroit Motor Show 2009, along with the latest BMW models featuring advanced sustainable mobility technology, reinforcing BMW Group’s position as the world’s leading premium automotive manufacturer.
Demonstrating a modern interpretation of the classic roadster design with its extra-long front lid, low-slung front end, long wheelbase and low seating position, the new Z4 embodies everything that the BMW brand stands for – combining innovation with elegant design and exceptional driving dynamics.
Characteristic design features such as the extra large engine compartment lid, black A-pillars and gill intakes signal the next generation of sports models from the Group. The upright BMW kidney grill, wide air intake and flowing shoulder line maintain the brand’s styling language and the exceptional road presence for which it is known.
Also on display at the Detroit Motor show and a major attraction of the BMW exhibit were the latest ActiveHybrid technologies. 2009 sees the introduction of hybrid drive systems offering the power and performance typical of the BMW brand while significantly reducing both fuel consumption and emissions.
The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid and the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid models represent the significant developments made in BMW Group’s robust EfficientDynamics strategy, which combines features for optimum energy management and aerodynamics with light-weight construction.
Both the Concept X6 and 7 Series ActiveHybrid models will be ready for production in 2009 with customer delivery at the end of the year
Also representing a major landmark in alternative fuels is the MINI E. BMW Group is the first premium automotive manufacturer to introduce a fleet of fully electric-powered cars for private use in the United States and Germany, to gain real customer feedback on electric drive cars. The MINI E project will help gather important information on purchasing criteria and the feasibility of introducing electric-drive cars on a wider scale.
Through its new models and drive concepts presented at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show, BMW Group once again proved its competence in the development of innovative and future-orientated vehicles.

BMW Group Middle East has revealed plans to bring its first ActiveHybrid vehicles to the region in 2009, marking the next stage of its EfficientDynamics strategy. Helping to address climate change across the Middle East, the world’s leading premium automotive manufacturer says environmental protection and sustainable mobility is a priority business focus.
Worldwide BMW Group has implemented a host of progressive initiatives designed to tackle various environmental and resource issues. This year will see many of those initiatives either launched or expanded upon within the Middle East.
Phil Horton, Managing Director of BMW Group Middle East explains: “At a global and regional level, we applaud the steps taken by governments and environmental bodies to introduce regulations and raise awareness of sustainability issues. For the BMW Group mobility and sustainability are inseparably linked. We pursue a holistic approach in our efforts to reduce or entirely eliminate the environmental impact of our products and processes. We aim to be an influential driver for environmental change and also protect the future of our company by offering innovative technologies that are in line with strict environmental standards.”
Following the introduction of fuel-saving technologies on its entire 2008 model line-up, BMW Group will bring its vision of a zero-emissions vehicle closer with the launch of its first production ActiveHybrid model later this year.
Based on the BMW X6, ActiveHybrid represents some of the most significant developments in BMW’s EfficientDynamics strategy, combining features for optimum energy management and aerodynamics with light-weight construction. The two-mode active transmission hybrid has an 8-cylinder petrol engine that uses almost 20 per cent less fuel than a comparable vehicle with a standard combustion engine.
“EfficientDynamics is a three-phased product strategy that has already seen the integration of advanced technologies on our latest cars and reduced fuel consumption by up to 23 per cent in Europe. Our new 7 Series alone offers five per cent more power and 12 per cent better fuel economy than its predecessor, making it the most fuel efficient in its segment. We are proud to be rolling out the next stage of EfficientDynamics with our X6 ActiveHybrid in 2009 followed by a 7 Series ActiveHybrid in 2010. Both these models will integrate the latest electric and petrol engine technologies, which will provide efficient power trains and further reduce emissions. At the same time we continue to invest in research and development of alternative fuels such as hydrogen so we can realise our long term vision of vehicles with zero emissions,” said Horton.
To address every phase of its vehicles’ life cycles, BMW Group is taking preventative steps to save energy and raw materials where possible and avoid or reduce its volume of waste. Currently 95 per cent of a BMW Group vehicle is recycled and 85 per cent of the materials can be reused.
New processes and resource management elements have also been installed at BMW production facilities to reduce the amount of waste, energy and water. The Steyr plant, which produces around 60 per cent of all BMW engines, recycles all the water used in the production process, saving 30 million litres of water each year. Spartanburg, the production facility for BMW X models, obtains half its energy from methane gas from a nearby landfill.
“BMW takes responsibility for protecting the environment and has been doing so long before the current debate on CO2 emissions started. The careful use of resources is a key pillar of our corporate philosophy, and one which we vehemently uphold across all areas of our business,’ added Horton.

The new 7 Series, BMW’s flagship model and major contributor to the brand’s growth and success, continues to remain at the forefront of the luxury segment offering the latest in automotive innovation and technology development.
The fifth generation model that was recently launched in the Middle East offers a host of industry first driver assistance technologies that bring unmatched driver engagement, handling and safety features to the luxury performance segment.
With Dynamic Driving Control, the first system of its kind that allows the driver to vary the set up of the 7 Series by selecting one of five settings – comfort, normal, sport, sport+ and traction - changing the suspension set-up from a comfort orientated feel to a more sporty and dynamic drive experience.
To optimise steering behaviour in all driving situations the Integral Active Steering function controls the steering angle of both the front and rear wheels. At low speed the rear wheels are turned in opposite directions of the front wheels, significantly enhancing the agility of the car and making the turning circle smaller. At higher speeds the Integral Active Steering turns the rear wheels in the same direction as the front, increasing the vehicle’s stability, maneuverability and comfort.
The new iDrive control system has been completely redesigned making it easier to access information, entertainment and comfort features A high-resolution Control Display with standardised menu guidance grants easy access to the radio, CD, satellite navigation and telecommunication functions.
Innovative information and active safety features have been enhanced and the BMW 7 Series is the first saloon in its segment to offer a Head-Up Display. This feature projects driving information such as speed, navigation, direction and alerts onto the windscreen. The virtual image appears in front of the car so that the driver’s attention stays on the road.
BMW is also the first manufacturer to offer a Night Vision system that is capable of identifying and detecting individual people. The thermal imaging technology detects humans in the dark at distances of up to 100 meters, then analyses the visual data and alerts the driver to potential pedestrian danger.
BMW has also introduced Land Departure Warning and Lane Change Warning systems to the new 7 Series. The Lane Departure Warning system alerts the driver before the vehicle drifts over the marked edge of the lane. Using a camera integrated in the rear-view mirror, the system recognizes whether the vehicle is threatening to stray outside the lane and the driver is alerted by a vibration of the steering wheel. Lane Change Warning helps the driver overtake safely by monitoring traffic conditions in adjacent lanes with radar sensors, covering an area extending from the blind angle directly next to the car and up to a distance of 60 metres behind.
The new BMW 7 Series represents some of the most significant technology developments. Combined, these features not only contribute to a more dynamic driving experience, but also increased safety for the driver and other road users.

For many the art of driving would normally involve a physics lesson, the reaction times of Michael Schumacher and a lot of practice. For Robin Rhode, the South African urban artist, the art of driving has meant becoming the first person to use a high performance premium sports car as a paintbrush.
For his piece “Expressions of Joy” Rhode used the new BMW Z4 Roadster, the latest sports model to be revealed by the world’s leading premium automotive manufacturer, to paint a massive 100 by 200-foot canvas. To the naked eye the swirls of bold splattered tyre marks look spontaneous, but in reality Rhode and his team painstakingly created the artwork in a Los Angeles studio, where they were joined by director Jake Scott (son of Ridley Scott) to shoot the latest TV ad campaign for the launch of the new Z4 Roadster.
The brief was to present the next generation of the BMW Z4 in a totally unusual location, in a manner that blended innovation and artistic vision. “This work is an expression of painting in action – my hope is to communicate the power and thrill inherent in the creation of art. For me, the use of an unconventional paintbrush like a high performance car is a great way to investigate the relationship between emotion, technology and industrial creativity,” said Rhode.
“Expressions of Joy” also pays homage to another BMW artist. "One source of inspiration was the seminal work of Gerhard Richter´s series of paintings 'Red, Yellow, Blue' made in 1973 for the company headquarters in Munich, Germany," Rhode explained.
The art work is the main theme for the marketing campaign supporting the launch of the new BMW Z4 Roadster, which engages a full range of channels including print and television advertising, guerilla marketing, point of sale packs, window stickers, flags, event invitations and even lifestyle merchandising. The highly unique concept is sure to help the new BMW Z4 to stand out from the crowd.
BMW is of course no stranger to the fine arts scene. For the past 32 years it has commissioned many of the world’s foremost artists to transform its production models to collection pieces for its BMW Art Car Series. But instead of being the canvas, this is the first time a BMW car has become the paintbrush.
James Crichton, Director of Sales and Marketing, BMW Group Middle East said: “This piece of art is a modern interpretation of the sheer driving pleasure that a BMW Z4 delivers. Characteristic design features on this model such as the low-slung front end, long wheelbase and gill intakes, combined with its fantastic performance on the road, means that the Z4 driving experience can be truly compared to an expression of joy. We believe the Z4 will outperform its predecessor model in the Middle East and look forward to its arrival.”
The new BMW Z4 was recently unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show and will arrive in the Middle East in April 2009. It has met with rave reviews across the globe with many critics hailing it as a work of art as well as a triumph of engineering. Featuring a new 6-cylinder engine, double-clutch gearbox and BMW M suspension with two damper settings, the new Z4 delivers a sportier yet harmoniously tuned driving experience. In fact it was the Roadster’s combination of innovation and elegant design that served as the rationale for Rhode’s masterpiece.

BMW Group, the leading premium automotive manufacturer, recorded an increase in Parts and Accessory Sales of 7 percent in 2008. The high level of customer service delivered by BMW Group’s exclusive importers in the region, an increase in the number of cars sold, and the understanding among BMW purchasers of the importance of original BMW parts and accessories have helped to drive this growth.
Rudolf Spann, After Sales Director, BMW Middle East said: “We are pleased with the increase in After Sales across the region. BMW Group automobiles are premium cars and like anything of value they need to be well maintained. It is important that BMW and MINI owners understand that using original parts and accessories maintains the residual value, performance and safety of their vehicles.”
The BMW Group’s exclusive importers continue to deliver exemplary customer service and After Sales support throughout the region. Many now offer customers the total peace of mind that comes with the BMW Service Inclusive Ultimate Package, previously known as the BMW Service + Repair Inclusive package.
The BSI Ultimate package covers all the major servicing costs of a BMW for the first five years, or 100,000kms (including wear and tear parts) the labour costs, and original BMW replacement parts.
Rudolf Spann continued: “The BMW Group invests considerable time, energy and money into carrying out thorough and uncompromising research. This expertise and knowledge is then passed on to the BMW drivers using the After Sales services of BMW Group’s exclusive importers. “

The design philosophy of the BMW Group continues to receive acclaim for the world’s leading premium automotive manufacturer with design experts at the red dot awards becoming the latest judges to bestow their seal of approval.
The number and diversity of the BMW Group products recognised by some of the world’s most prestigious design awards this year, is testament to the success of BMW’s product-specific design strategies.
The BMW Group’s design philosophy inspired an impressive tally of seven major accolades from the internationally renowned red dot label for design quality in the field of product development. This included the experts’ acclaim for the new BMW 7 Series and the new Z4 roadster – a significant accomplishment given the 3,231 products submitted from around the globe for judging.
The new BMW 7 Series, a key player in the luxury saloon segment and the brand’s flagship model, received praise for its harmonious combination of elegance, sportiness and visual presence, and a body design offering both an outstanding degree of comfort as well as superior driving dynamics.
The new BMW Z4 roadster, which launches in May, also scooped a red dot award. According to judges, its modern interpretation of classic roadster styling is a quality that helps the new BMW Z4 to attain a special position in its segment. The elongated bonnet, flat waistline and seat position located well to the back in the vicinity of the rear axle, combined for the first time with a retractable hardtop also makes this a hotly anticipated model launch for the Middle East region.
The red dot award successes follows the recent IF Product Design Awards in Hanover, where BMW scooped wins for its new 7 Series, 1 Series Coupe and Convertible as well as the MINI Cooper S Clubman. In recent weeks, BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad vehicles also received awards from the Design Prize of the German Federal Republic, the Eyes On Design Award and the Good Design Award presented in the USA.
The award ceremony will take place during a festive award gala at the Aalto Theatre in Essen on 29 June 2009.

Against the backdrop of the global economic and financial crisis, BMW Group Middle East has announced that Q1 2009 witnessed healthy growth in market share despite a moderate nine per cent sales decrease compared to its Q1 2008 figures across 14 importers in the region.
BMW Group Middle East reported positive growth in sales during Q1 2009 for several importers including Lebanon and Syria where sales were up 108% and 116% respectively and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which experienced growth of 15%.
“A decline in sales was not unexpected given the increased impact of the global economic and financial crisis on the region. The industry is facing challenging conditions, and in the current context a nine per cent decline in sales is in line with our expectations,” said James Crichton, Sales & Marketing Director, BMW Group Middle East. “However, we have been working closely with our importers and the results have helped us to not only achieve growth in several markets, but also increase our market share by two per cent from our two main competitors.”
Crichton continued: “Our flagship 7 Series model and X6 Sports Activity Coupé were the two biggest volume sellers which demonstrates that the underlying fundamentals remain solid in the region’s luxury segment.”
The X6 Sports Activity Coupé performed very strongly, with 584 units sold during Q1 2009, representing an impressive 1,618% growth in sales versus 2008. The 7 Series sold 1,118 units, a 93% growth in sales.
Across the region the biggest markets by volume of units sold were Dubai with 772 units, followed by Abu Dhabi with 589 units sold. 568 units were sold in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and 445 units in Kuwait during the first three months of 2009.
Crichton highlighted BMW Group’s focus on innovation and customer requirements by drawing attention to the successful BMW Premium Selection programme: “We continue to put emphasis behind our used car programme called BMW Premium Selection. It is a global used car programme that has been received extremely well by customers and BMW importers who have invested heavily. Following a spike in regional BMW Premium Selection sales in the fourth quarter of 2008 confirming the attractiveness of the offering during a period of economic slowdown, results point to the continuation of this trend into the first quarter of 2009.
BMW Premium Selection sales continued to grow strongly with a 59% increase versus to 2008 in sales across eight markets that sold 456 units. The best performing markets for BMW Premium Selection for the first quarter of 2009 were the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia selling 128 units, a 256% increase; Dubai which sold 120 units, a 119% increase; and Bahrain where 39 units were sold, a 130% increase.
Reiterating BMW Group’s commitment to the region, Crichton added: “We expect the rest of 2009 to be full of challenges but are confident that we will weather the stormy economic conditions successfully as we are a strong performing company with a solid foundation.”

BMW Group, the world’s leading premium automotive manufacturer, has unveiled the highly anticipated BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M that are scheduled to arrive in the Middle East in October this year. These are the first all-wheel-drive models to offer the supreme performance, dynamic driving features, athletic design, and premium quality typical of a BMW M Car.
An unprecedented story in its own right, BMW pioneered the Sports Activity Vehicle segment with the launch of the BMW X5, which has sold over 845,000 units globally in just one decade. The BMW X5 is testament to the leading and progressive nature of the BMW brand becoming a benchmark for innovation, design and performance for the premium automotive industry.
In 2008 BMW took another bold step forward with the world’s first Sports Activity Coupé, the BMW X6. This highly innovative vehicle captures the features and design qualities typical of a large Coupé combined with the X family high driving position and versatility. The X6 has secured an unrivalled position in the Middle East market reporting sales of 2,372 units since its launch in 2008.
Now, the combination of power, agility and character of both the BMW X5 M and the X6 M results in a level of driving performance never seen before in their respective classes. Both models offer unparalled performance in every respect, providing dynamic driving qualities unique to any of their rivals, and ensuring an experience of unlimited supremacy in challenging motoring conditions or in everyday traffic.
Both models are powered by a newly developed M TwinPower Turbo V8 high-performance engine delivering 555 hp at an engine speed range between of 6,000 rpm and a top speed electronically limited to 250km/h. The six-speed sports automatic gearbox allows for extremely short shift times and very smooth gear-changes.
The new M TwinPower Turbo engine develops outstanding output and performance with equally outstanding efficiency. In addition to direct High Precision Injection, both the BMW X5 M and the X6 M are equipped with a wide range of BMW’s EfficientDynamics technologies that offer a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emission.
BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system improves traction on rough terrain and enhances driving dynamics on the road. BMW’s xDrive is naturally geared to the specific power and performance characteristics of the BMW X5 M and the X6 M. Dynamic Performance Control, a unique technology which delivers uncompromised tracking stability on the road comes standard on both models. The xDrive also interacts with the cars’ special M suspension including Adaptive Drive and the newly developed Servotronic Power Steering, to ensure the dynamic driving behaviour so characteristic of a BMW M Car.
In the M Drive menu the driver is able to set up and pre-configure both the Power Mode and the set-up of the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Electronic Damper Control (EDC), which help stablise handling even in critical situations. The driver is even able to save his favourite set-up and subsequently retrieve it at any time simply by pressing the M Drive button on the steering wheel.
The BMW X5 M and the X6 M are the only vehicles in their segment to come as standard with different-sized front and rear tyres, running in each case on model specific 20-inch light-alloy rims. The combination of ideal tyre sizes in terms of driving dynamics promotes both the exceptionally good transmission of power to the rear axle and the precise, exactly dosed steering behaviour of both models.
The truly outstanding potential of both models comes out clearly in their looks and design. The front – uniform for both models – with their massive air intakes and twin exhaust tailpipes are an impressive indication of the awesome engine power. Both models have a M specific cockpit and are fitted with M seats, M leather steering wheel and many opportunities for personalization.
Beyond these features, both of these all-wheel-drive high performance
sports cars stand out clearly as unique models in their own right: The BMW X5 M clearly boasts its superior power and exclusivity at very first sight, while the BMW X6 M, in its unique design, alludes to fascinating driving dynamics and the car’s athletic charisma.

Bahrain – The BMW Sauber F1 Team are hoping for a successful return to the scene of their first race as the 2009 Formula One World Championship arrives in Bahrain for the first Middle East Grand Prix of the season.
BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen and the BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica spoke at a press conference held at Euro Motors, the exclusive importer for BMW in Bahrain and took time out of their tight schedules to greet both fans and media and answered some key questions ahead of the Grand Prix.
With the memories of last year’s race still fresh in his mind, Theissen certainly remained upbeat about the 2009 event: “In Bahrain we aim to bring the first major overseas stint to a positive end. It also marks the end of the second set of back-to-back races within five weeks. We look back on the previous Bahrain Grand Prix with satisfaction: in 2008 Robert gained his first ever pole position with the BMW Sauber F1 Team, achieving another milestone. After our appearance in Shanghai we are now heading for another region that is important to BMW. For us as a manufacturer in the premium sector the Middle East is also a very significant market.”
Analysing the fourth race of the year Robert Kubica said: “I’m looking forward to the race in Bahrain. The Bahrain International Circuit has a couple of long straights and three characteristically low-speed corners that require heavy braking. Wind can play an important role in Sakhir as it influences the balance of the car. Also, the wind blows sand onto parts of the track, which leads to changing grip conditions. Luckily we had the chance to test the F1.09 car in Bahrain in February, although weather conditions were unstable and windy then. Last year we performed quite well in Bahrain – after securing pole position in qualifying I managed to finish the race on the podium.”
Nick Heidfeld adds: “I enjoy driving in Bahrain. I like the modern complex and the circuit. The section from the fifth to the penultimate corner is particularly well designed. This time I’ll be again arriving quite early to allow time for my fitness training. It will be interesting to see what the weather brings. Usually the climate in Bahrain has been very pleasant, but we’ve also had incredible heat, and during winter testing there was a huge sandstorm. In 2008 there was a concert by Akon after the race, which I also remember well.”
Despite a disappointing showing in 2006, the team returned in excellent form the following year, with Nick Heidfeld finishing in 4th position and Robert Kubica following him home in 6th position. But the best was yet to come. In 2008 Kubica qualified for pole position for the first time in his, and the team’s, Formula One career going on to claim third place on the podium. Meanwhile his team mate Heidfeld, starting from 6th on the grid, improved during the race to claim fourth spot. In total 11 valuable points were amassed for the team as BMW Sauber went on to collect 135 points during the entire season.

In the tenth anniversary year of the BMW X5, the world’s leading premium automotive manufacturer welcomes the new X5 Sport Edition to the Middle East region. The new market segment created by BMW through the launch of the original X5 is now internationally recognised as the Sports Activity Vehicle which combines the sporty and luxury attributes of a typical BMW saloon with exceptional off-road driving capabilities.
The BMW X5 Sport Edition takes the evolution of this class a step further by offering a range of features that further enhances the athletic appearance of this Sports Activity Vehicle. Available for the 4.8 and 3.0 engine variants, the Sports Edition delivers a number of M kit features, and high gloss BMW Individual roof rails. As befits a Sport Edition each variant is also fitted with the M body kit sculpting a more aggressive and dynamic profile accentuated by M exterior finishes and 20 inch M light alloy wheels.
Inside the vehicle the M leather steering wheel, sports seats, and burled walnut trim reinforces the sense of competitive performance and driving pleasure. The X5 Sport Edition also comes with an option of a comprehensive BMW Service Inclusive (BSI) warranty package that covers the cost of service, maintenance and repair work for a minimum of 12-months.
The X5 Sport Edition builds upon the foundation created in 1999 when BMW pioneered the Sports Activity Vehicle with the launch of the X5, a model that 10 years later has achieved extensive success on a global and regional level including 19,209 units sold in the Middle East region alone since its launch.
From the very beginning, the key to the success of the BMW X5 lay in its combination of two fascinating qualities which had never been realised in any vehicle previously. The model successfully transferred characteristic BMW driving pleasure into a completely new market segment. For the very first time, the spacious, permanently four-wheel driven BMW X5 combined the driving dynamics of a BMW sedan with supreme mobility away from asphalted road surfaces. Its integral safety body and independent wheel suspension clearly set the BMW X5 apart from conventional off-road vehicles, with the driving stability system DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) which helps stabilise handling even in critical situations ensuring supreme driving qualities both on and off the road.
Dynamic performance and versatility are also expressed in the design of the X5. Other striking features include the raised seating position which instantly gives the driver the same sense of supremacy and, the spacious, versatile and high-quality interior provides a whole new driving experience for an all-wheel-drive automobile.
The BMW X5’s position as a role model and benchmark of its class in terms of driving dynamics, efficiency, versatility, premium quality and safety is now perfectly complimented with a stylish athletic sportiness, a combination designed to power the X5 Sports Edition forward in the Middle East.

Commemorated yearly on 5th June, World Environment Day (WED) is one of the principal events through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. In line with WED’s core objective of empowering people to become active agents of sustainable development, BMW Group is working towards a more sustainable future in the development of its vehicles.
The BMW Group is the world’s most sustainable automotive manufacturer today. In 2008, and for the fourth consecutive year, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index ranked the group the automotive industry’s global sustainability leader. Behind this achievement lies the firm’s recognition that the future of mobility requires a new balance between individual and ecological requirements, and that this balance applies to both drive systems and production processes.
Phil Horton, Managing Director of BMW Group Middle East explained: “The ethos of World Environment Day compels us to take responsibility and all work collectively towards a more sustainable future. At BMW Group we believe that mobility and sustainability are inseparably linked and we are constantly working to reduce our impact on the environment while offering our customers the best in mobility.”
Commenting on BMW Group’s focus for a more sustainable future, Horton added: “We have anchored sustainability in our production process through our “Clean Production” philosophy which works to reduce waste, while EfficientDynamics is our product-specific development strategy to ensure we reach zero emissions for all of our vehicles.”
As part of its “Clean Production” philosophy, the German Steyr plant, which produces around 60% of all BMW engines, recycles all the water used in the production process, saving around 30 million litres of water each year, - the equivalent of 12 Olympic size swimming pools. In Spartanburg, where X3, X5 and X6 models are produced, the production plant now obtains half its energy from methane gas generated from a nearby landfill. BMW Group plans to reduce the consumption of energy, water, sewage, solvent emissions as well as waste in its international production network by another 30 percent between 2006 and 2012.
EfficientDynamics has helped the BMW Group reduce fleet emissions further than any other car manufacturer. The new BMW 7 Series is the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class and yet more powerful than its predecessor, proving that sustainability need not compromise driving performance.
The 7 Series also includes a comprehensive range of design and technology features, exemplifying the EfficientDynamics strategy, which reduce the impact of the vehicle on the environment. Brake Energy Regeneration, which transforms the vehicle’s kinetic energy into electricity to charge the battery; Intelligent Lightweight Construction which uses aluminium to reduce weight and improve weight distribution, thereby improving fuel efficiency; and Low Rolling Resistance Tyres with Runflat Technology, made of special materials that prevent tyre deformation and ensure maximum efficiency.
Another important project is BMW Group’s MINI E. BMW is the first premium manufacturer to deploy a fleet of fully electric-powered cars for private use in daily traffic in the United States and Germany. The MINI E is part of a pilot project designed to demonstrate a whole new dimension in individual mobility which is entirely emission-free, driver friendly and ideal for every day, and just as much fun to drive as a MINI with a combustion engine.
For the BMW Group designing for the future relies on innovation, which is why it remains at the forefront of new technologies and mobility concepts. This includes hybrid technology, electric drives, hydrogen fuel and mobility solutions for the world’s megacities. Next year will see the introduction of the first Active-Hybrid variants of the 7 Series and X6 to the Middle East, bringing the goal of zero emissions ever closer.

The BMW Group steps up its commitment to sustainable production processes by investing an additional US$12 million in the expansion of its “Gas to Energy” programme at its Spartanburg plant, the production facility for BMW X vehicles. In an effort to improve capacity and efficiency, new gas turbine generators are being fitted which will double the plant’s overall electrical output while using the same amount of methane gas.
Capable of producing 11,000 kilowatts (kW) of electricity, the two new turbine generators will replace four older ones and improve electrical output at the plant from 14% to nearly 30%.
The programme, which was implemented in late 2002, collects methane gas at a nearby landfill and transports it 9.5 miles via pipeline to BMW's Spartanburg production facility. More than 60% of the plant's total energy requirements are already met by burning methane gas, a byproduct of landfill waste decomposition. BMW says the expansion will help the company to more efficiently use the gas siphoned from the landfill.
“BMW’s landfill gas programme has been a tremendous initiative for the plant,” said Josef Kerscher, President of BMW Manufacturing. “Using methane gas to power our plant is one example of our focus on environmentally-friendly production processes.”
In addition to adding larger turbines and heat recovery boilers, BMW will integrate a new specialised treatment system to remove siloxanes from the methane gas (a compound common to landfill gas and potentially destructive to gas turbines). Two of the four original 1,200kW gas turbine engines will remain in place to serve as a back-up for the new system.
The landfill project has saved BMW Group an average of US$5 million in energy costs annually. The new turbines are expected to increase those savings by up to US$2 million a year while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 92,000 tonnes per year.
Additional Facts:
• BMW has overseen the design, procurement, and construction of the expansion and will manage the overall operation and maintenance of the new system
• BMW's landfill project is the only project that co-generates electricity and hot water for use at an industrial location remote from the landfill
• By recycling methane gas, BMW is able to improve local air quality by lowering regional emissions of greenhouse gases (methane and carbon dioxide)
• For its original efforts BMW Manufacturing Co. LLC has won several national and state environmental awards, including the 2003 South Carolina Governor’s Pollution Prevention Award, EPA’s Green Power Award, and EPA’s Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) Project of the Year award
• Based on calculations provided by the EPA, the reduction of 92,000 tonnes per year of carbon dioxide emissions is equivalent to the benefit of planting over 23,000 acres of trees annually or 30 times the size of New York’s Central Park
• To date, over 60% of the plant’s total energy requirements are provided by landfill gas

Munich / Stuttgart. Scoring outstanding wins in the three categories of the International Engine of the Year Award, the BMW Group once again highlights its top position this year as a manufacturer of particularly powerful and, at the same time, efficient engines. In the world’s most significant engine contest, the V8 power unit featured in the BMW M3, the straight-six with Twin Turbo Technology to be admired, among other models, in the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 1 Series and the BMW X6, as well as the four-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged engine in the MINI Cooper S, have all scored triumphant victories in their respective classes.
The Awards were presented on 17 June 2009 at the Engine Expo in Stuttgart.
This triple victory continues the BMW Group’s story of success in the International Engine of the Year Award. In this contest held since 1999 BMW engines have brought home overall victory no less than six times, including the four last years in a row.
This year’s three winners once again thrilled the jury through their fascinating development of power as well as their up-to-date efficiency. This combination of such superior virtues is the result of the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy characterising both the eight cylinder from BMW M GmbH, the straight-six from BMW, and the MINI four-cylinder.
In the engine category between 3.0 and 4.0 litres the V8 power unit featured in the BMW M3 successfully defended the title it had already won last year. Indeed, this 309 kW/420 hp 4.0-litre makes a substantial contribution to the success of BMW’s high-performance sports car in the market, now available in the guise of the BMW M3 Coupé, the BMW M3 Saloon, and the BMW M3 Convertible.
The 3.0-litre 225 kW/306 hp six-cylinder with Twin Turbo and High Precision Injection, in turn, this year dominates the engine category between 2.5 and 3.0 litres for the third time in a row.
Continuity has also been the name of the game in the engine category between 1.4 and 1.8 litres ever since the year 2007, with the 1.6-litre four-cylinder power unit in the MINI Cooper S with its twin-scroll turbocharger, direct gasoline injection and maximum output of 128 kW/175 hp still setting the standard.
The decisions on the International Engine of the Year Award are taken by an international jury made up of renowned motoring journalists. This year the team of no less than 65 experts came from 32 countries, awarding prizes in eight engine classes based on size and in three special categories, as well as the special award for the overall winner.
In the eleven contests held so far since 1999, the BMW Group has already brought home more than 40 trophies. This ongoing success in the world’s most significant engine contest is impressive proof of the BMW Group’s unique competence the world over in the area of powertrain development.

The opening of the new BMW Aerodynamic Test Centre in Dingolfing, Germany marks a new chapter in BMW’s journey towards completely sustainable automotive engineering. The €170 million investment underscores the ongoing enhancement of aerodynamics as an essential cornerstone of BMW Group’s EfficientDynamics strategy and introduces to the world the first wind tunnel capable of testing two vehicles at the same time.
EfficientDynamics is a three-phase product development strategy that includes short, medium and long term objectives to help BMW Group achieve zero carbon emissions. The significant improvement in precision testing available at the new Centre is a key part of that plan and takes automotive analytics to a new level. BMW will now be able to examine aerodynamics during overtaking and determine the effect that the two vehicles have on each other.
For the BMW Group improved vehicle efficiency should never compromise driving performance. Nowhere is that mission clearer than at the Dingolfing Centre. Optimised aerodynamics in the development of new models has a direct impact on a car’s fuel economy and emission management, with a 10% reduction of air drag equating to a 2.5% reduction in fuel consumption. It also improves performance, driving dynamics and road handling through a more precise measurement of uplift and downforce.
The wind tunnel will generate precise and realistic measurements, recreating real-life situations without any distortion. This is made possible through the use of an 8 metre fan for horizontal testing, able to generate winds of 300 km/h or 180 mph, and a fan for vertical testing, positioned directly over the middle of the tunnel. Cutting-edge technology maps the results of the testing, helping BMW experts to refine design developments in future models.
In addition, the Aerodynamics Test Centre houses the Aerolab, a high-tech facility where scale models can be tested and complex calculations run, enabling crucial feedback to be inputted to the development process at an earlier stage than ever before.
The Centre also brings together in one place BMW’s 500 aerodynamics specialists who were previously housed in disparate plants, as well as the engineers and designers located at the nearby Research and Innovation Centre.
The Aerodynamics Test Centre will enable more precise testing in parallel with computer diagnostics to enhance driving performance and efficiency of every BMW model.

Munich- The SAM Group today published its latest evaluation for the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI). For the fifth consecutive year, it rated the BMW Group as the leader in its industry, making it the world’s most sustainable automobile manufacturer. The BMW Group is the only company in the automobile industry to have been listed in this important sustainability index family every year since it was established in 1999.
“We are delighted that the BMW Group is super sector leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World for the fifth consecutive year. This proves once again that we are well on our way to establishing sustainability as the guiding principle for all our processes. We refined our sustainability strategy in the first half of 2009 – this was the next logical step and another important milestone,” said Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.
The Board of Management of the BMW Group declared sustainability one of the company’s core strategic principles back in 2000. At the BMW Group corporate sustainability is firmly entrenched throughout the entire value chain: from the development of fuel-saving and alternative vehicle concepts through clean production processes to green recycling practices. The BMW Group also accepts responsibility for its roughly 100,000 employees and is involved in social projects outside of its plants.
In recent months the BMW Group has taken further important steps towards further improving sustainability. Each and every proposal today is measured against the corporate goal of sustainability. At the highest management level a Sustainability Board was established in summer 2009. This board, which comprises the entire Board of Management, determines the strategic alignment for sustainability issues. Twice a year it meets to discuss and adopt the strategies and activities proposed at operational level.

James Crichton, Sales & Marketing Director, BMW Group Middle East said: “The BMW 7 Series embodies all the qualities associated with premium vehicles such as power, performance and luxury, and is a class leader in emission reductions and automotive technologies. These enduring qualities have been continually refined over the past thirty years in which the BMW 7 Series has delivered stellar performance in the premium automotive segment. We are proud of its latest sales results, and we look forward to the continuing success of our flagship model for the rest of the year.”
The new BMW 7 Series features a host of assistance technologies that bring unmatched driver engagement, handling and safety features to the luxury performance segment. These include Head-Up Display, which projects driving information such as speed, navigation, direction and alerts onto the windscreen, so that the driver’s attention stays on the road; Night Vision, which uses thermal imaging technology to detect humans in the dark at distances of up to 100 meters; and Lane Departure Warning and Lane Change Warning which help the driver overtake safely by monitoring traffic conditions in adjacent lanes with radar sensors.

The new BMW X5 M and X6 M models have made their debut in the Middle East, heralding a new chapter in the proud history of BMW M. The new BMW X5 M and X6 M are the first all-wheel-drive models to offer the supreme performance, dynamic driving features, athletic design and premium quality typical of a BMW M Car.
Commenting on the arrival of these exciting new models, Phil Horton, Managing Director of BMW Group Middle East said: “The combination of BMW’s M philosophy with X range models paves the way for a truly exclusive and dynamic driving experience.
“Both models set new standards in their class in terms of dynamic performance, reflecting their motorsport lineage. The X5 M and X6 M take the Sports Activity Vehicle segment to the next level and we are confident that both models will contribute to BMW Group’s ongoing success, considering that both the X5 and the X6 are already excellent performers in this market place.”
An unprecedented story in its own right, BMW pioneered the Sports Activity Vehicle segment with the launch of the X5 which has sold close to one million units globally in just one decade. The X5 is testament to the leading and progressive nature of the BMW brand becoming a benchmark for innovation, design and performance for the premium automotive industry.
In 2008 BMW took another bold step forward with the world’s first Sports Activity Coupé, the BMW X6. This highly innovative vehicle captures the features and design qualities typical of a large Coupé combined with the X family high driving position and versatility. The X6 has secured an unrivalled position in the Middle East market reporting strong sales since its launch in 2008.
Both the X5 M and X6 M new models are powered by a newly developed M TwinPower Turbo V8 high-performance engine delivering 555 hp at an engine speed range between of 6,000 rpm, acceleration from 0-100km/h in 4.7 seconds, and a top speed electronically limited to 250km/h.
The driver is also able to save his favourite set-up and subsequently retrieve it at any time simply by pressing the M Drive button on the steering wheel.
The front – uniform for both models – with massive air intakes and twin exhaust tailpipes are an impressive indication of the awesome engine power. Both models have a M specific cockpit and are fitted with M seats, M leather steering wheel and many opportunities for personalization.
Beyond these features, both of these all-wheel-drive high performance sports cars stand out clearly as unique models in their own right: The BMW X5 M clearly boasts its superior power and exclusivity at very first sight, while the BMW X6 M, in its unique design, alludes to fascinating driving dynamics and the car’s athletic charisma.

Dubai - The star of this year’s BMW stand will be the M1 Homage. This unique model, making its debut in the Middle East, re-ignites the flame of a unique sporting heritage that exploded onto the Motorsports scene with the original BMW M1 more than 30 years ago.
The BMW M1 designed by Giorgio Giugiaro was a car of superlatives and a highly emotive vehicle that was uncompromisingly primed for the race track. This tribute model exhibits an emotional design that showcases technology and integrates it into the overall aesthetics of the vehicle.
Commenting on the attention-grabbing model Phil Horton, Managing Director of BMW Middle East said: “The BMW M1 was an utterly uncompromising super sports car which exuded passion; its forerunner, the BMW Turbo by Paul Bracq, displayed innovative technical solutions that found their expression in emotional design. Munich. At the Copenhagen climate summit (COP 15, December 7 to 18), the BMW Group will take part in a variety of activities affirming its commitment, as industry leader in sustainability issues, to the fight against climate change. The BMW Group will not only provide vehicles for the official UN shuttle service, but for the first time at such an event will also take part in two official side events, at which it will put forward substantive ideas for tackling climate change. Partners will be the German Ministry for Environment, Conservation and Reactor Safety and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. Furthermore, the BMW Group will also co-host a symposium at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. And the BMW Group is also joining the "Hopenhagen" campaign initiated by the UN for a deal on climate change.
Ahead of the global climate summit, Dr Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, has set out his expectations: "We do support a common climate reduction target. The industrialised countries must share the burden equally – not least in order to prevent competitive distortions and displacement effects."
As far as the mobility sector is concerned, Reithofer sees the following challenges: "We expect Copenhagen to help pave the way for sustainable mobility. The next step after setting ambitious targets will be to translate them into concrete measures. For example, governments must offer incentives towards the purchase of electric cars, in order to ensure that there is sufficient initial demand."
Reduction in CO2 emissions of at least 25% by 2020
At the same time the BMW Group is also committed to making its own contribution towards the climate targets. The company intends to reduce the CO2 emissions of its products by at least 25% by 2020. To achieve this goal, technologies like zero-emission electric drive will play a vital role. Between 1995 and 2008, BMW Group has already reduced the EU fleet-average emissions by more than 25%. The company has also launched a wide-ranging sustainability strategy. Frank-Peter Arndt, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production, comments: "The BMW Group is the world's most sustainable car company. That was confirmed once again in 2009 when the Dow Jones Sustainability Index listed the BMW Group as sector leader for the fifth consecutive year. No other manufacturer is as economical in its use of resources. For us this status represents both a motivation and an obligation. Both in our products and in our production processes, we shall not be easing off the pace. We aim to ensure that all our processes are geared to sustainability."
Detailed information about the BMW Group's activities at the Copenhagen climate summit, in particular about the side events being co-organised by the BMW Group, is available at www.press.bmwgroup.com.

The BMW 7 Series, BMW’s flagship model and major contributor to the brand’s Middle East growth, continues to remain at the forefront of the luxury segment by offering the latest in automotive innovation and technology development.
The fifth generation model, launched in the Middle East earlier this year, offers a host of driver assistance technologies including innovative safety features, such as Lane Departure Warning and Lane Change Warning systems.
The Lane Departure Warning system alerts the driver before the vehicle drifts over the marked edge of the lane. Using a camera integrated in the rear-view mirror, the system recognises if the vehicle is threatening to stray outside the lane and the driver is alerted by a vibration of the steering wheel.
Lane Change Warning system helps the driver avoid collisions when overtaking and changing lanes. Radar sensors at the rear of the car monitor the traffic behind, and trigger the appearance of a dark symbol on the wing mirror whenever any vehicle moves into a potentially dangerous position. This symbol begins to flash and the steering wheel vibrates as a warning to the driver.
Commenting on these safety features, Phil Horton, Managing Director of BMW Group Middle East said: “Both these advanced driver assistance technologies demonstrate BMW’s commitment to road safety and innovation by reducing the potential risk of accidents by providing the driver with greater information on surrounding road users through industry-leading assistance technologies.”
The new BMW 7 Series represents some of the most significant technology developments in the automotive industry. Combined, these features not only contribute to a more dynamic driving experience, but also increased safety for the driver and other road users.
