BMW EfficientDynamics is the strategy developed by BMW to minimise fuel consumption and emissions while simultaneously increasing dynamics and driving pleasure. It is a comprehensive technology package that includes the drive train, energy management and the BMW EfficientLightweight vehicle concept – and is standard in every BMW.
The BMW TwinPower Turbo engine range's new generation of petrol engines is responsible for the improved performance and lower fuel consumption in BMW vehicles. Optimised aerodynamics also contribute to the increased efficiency.
SPORTS EXHAUST SYSTEM.
The full-bodied sound of the sports exhaust system perfectly complements the vehicle's overall athleticism. The sound can also be modified using an integrated exhaust valve mechanism, which is controlled by the Driving Experience Control. The dynamic SPORT and SPORT+ driving modes are accentuated by a thrilling, even more distinctive sound, while the comfort-oriented modes are accompanied by more discreet engine acoustics that better suit longer journeys and a more luxurious driving experience.
Powerful and unmistakable.
What may appear to be a matter of course is often the result of extremely hard work. The BMW 6 Series Convertible is no exception. The ease with which it is controlled is the product of meticulous, high-precision chassis tuning. BMW EfficientDynamics technologies such as the high-torque BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder engines and the standard-feature 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission make this open BMW 6 Series model a dynamic convertible in which you can sit back and enjoy the light, airy feeling of sun and airstream.
The BMW 6 Series Convertible impresses with precise handling and absolute directional stability. The technical basis for this is the chassis, which guarantees optimal contact with the road surface and ideal handling in all situations. The chassis of the BMW 6 Series Convertible combines perfectly attuned technical components, evenly balanced 50:50 weight distribution between the axles as well as rear-wheel drive.
The rear axle ensures that the engine power is transferred dynamically to the street, while the steering remains free of any drive influences. The double-arm front axle and the integral rear axle also form part of the chassis. To help to reduce the weight of the vehicle, both are made primarily of aluminium. Because less is more: in the case of the BMW 6 Series Convertible, less mass, more agility, comfort and safety.
Integral Active Steering
Integral Active Steering for vehicles with rear wheel drive combines steering for the rear wheels with a variable steering angle for the front axle. At speeds of up to around 60 km/h, the rear wheels turn opposite the front wheels. The seemingly shorter wheelbase improves manoeuvrability and agility. Beginning around 60 km/h, the rear wheels turn parallel to the front wheels. The wheelbase feels longer, which improves stability as well as comfort – especially when changing lanes quickly or abruptly.
Driving Experience Control incl. ECO PRO
Driving Experience Control offers the driver the choice between COMFORT mode, for the standard engine and transmission settings, ECO PRO mode, which is geared towards greater efficiency, and SPORT mode, which enables even more dynamic driving. ECO PRO mode adjusts the characteristics of the accelerator and transmission as well as the heating/air conditioning settings to make the drive as fuel-efficient as possible.
ECO PRO mode reduces fuel consumption by up to 20 percent. Further fuel savings can be achieved using the ""coasting"" mode, the route-ahead assistant and ECO PRO route. The route-ahead assistant uses the navigation system to assess local road conditions and give tips in advance. If there is a speed limit change around the next bend, the system advises the driver to slow down before the bend.
ECO PRO route also helps to ensure the efficient use of fuel. It suggests an efficiency-optimised route that takes into account the volume of traffic, individual driving style and local conditions. The ""coasting"" function allows the vehicle to coast along the road at up to 160 km/h when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator without braking. In SPORT mode, the car responds more directly, leading to a more dynamic driving experience.
8-SPEED STEPTRONIC SPORT TRANSMISSION.
The 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission adapts to suit individual driving styles. It is perfect for everything from comfortable cruising through to a very dynamic drive. In addition to automatic gear selection, it is of course possible to shift gears manually at any time. The gear can be shifted using the dynamically designed selector lever or the shift paddles on the steering wheel.
In Sport mode, the gear shifts are configured for maximum performance. Thanks to the fine increments and eight gears, the engine is always kept at the level at which it can make best use of its power and efficiency. It also makes acceleration faster, when overtaking another vehicle for example.
When travelling at high speeds, the additional eighth gear reduces the required engine speed, thereby also reducing the fuel consumption and engine noise. This is also where the newly developed converter clutch comes into play. The 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission offers the greatest shifting comfort and the best possible efficiency.
Launch Control is a function included in the 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission which enables maximum acceleration from a standing start. To avail of this function, activate DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) by briefly pushing the DSC button (Dynamic Stability Control), move the gear lever to the "S" position, firmly hold down the brake and press the accelerator pedal to kickdown. Release the brake while maintaining kickdown, and the vehicle will accelerate to the maximum until the accelerator is released. This is a feature which is destined to delight drivers with dynamic, sporty ambitions.
The intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system adapts perfectly to even the most challenging road surface conditions, ensuring optimal traction at all times. xDrive and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) ensure that the BMW remains safe and stable. Controlled via the DSC sensor system, xDrive flexibly and quickly distributes drive power between the axles in order to prevent oversteer or understeer on bends, thereby ensuring outstanding directional stability. Moreover, it guarantees a rapid, safe acceleration even on slippery or steep stretches. In critical road conditions, the DSC doesn't need to intervene as much. Thus, BMW xDrive combines all the advantages of an all-wheel drive system – traction, directional stability and driving safety – with classic BMW agility.
INTELLIGENT ENERGY MANAGEMENT.
ECO PRO mode
The ECO PRO mode helps drivers reduce their fuel consumption by up to 20 percent, depending on their driving style – according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study. The "coasting" function, the route-ahead assistant and ECO PRO route make it possible to save a further five percent.
The coasting function decouples the drive train from the engine and the vehicle rolls without any engine resistance. The car "coasts" when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator between 50 and 160 km/h and does not apply the brakes. If needed, the route-ahead assistant can intelligently suppress coasting.
Based on data from the navigation system, the route-ahead assistant recognises speed limits, built-up areas, bends, roundabouts, turns and motorway exits, and advises the driver to stop accelerating at just the right moment.
ECO PRO route shows the most efficient route based on the traffic situation, driving style and local conditions. The on-board computer displays the percentage of fuel that can be saved by driving along the route selected by ECO PRO route.
Automatic Start/Stop function
The Automatic Start/Stop function ensures that fuel is only used when the car is actually moving. When the vehicle comes to a temporary standstill, for example at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, the Automatic Start/Stop function saves fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car is in neutral position and the driver brakes the car to a complete standstill.
A signal in the Info Display indicates that the Automatic Start/Stop function is active. As soon as or the foot taken from the brake, the engine turns itself back on automatically.
This function never compromises driving comfort or safety, as it remains inactive if the engine has not reached its optimal running temperature, the interior has not yet been sufficiently heated or cooled, if the battery level is too low or if the steering wheel is being turned. If necessary, a central control unit restarts the engine even when at a standstill, for example if the car begins to roll or if condensation starts to form on the windscreen. The Automatic Start/Stop function can be switched off at any time with the push of a button.
Brake Energy Regeneration
Every time the driver brakes, kinetic energy is generated and until recently this energy went unused. Brake Energy Regeneration takes advantage of this long-overlooked potential. It harnesses the coasting energy that is generated whenever the driver brakes or takes his or her foot off the accelerator and turns it into electricity. This electricity is then used to charge the car battery. This intelligent energy management system means that the alternator no longer needs to run constantly, which reduces the strain on the generator. The result: reduced fuel consumption and increased propulsion power – classic attributes of BMW EfficientDynamics.
